Richard Marcus holds the Coil Chair in Litigation at UC Hastings Law in San Francisco. He is lead author of leading American casebooks on Complex Litigation and Civil Procedure. Since 1996, he has served as Associate Reporter to the U.S. Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Civil Rules, which drafts amendments to the US Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. In that capacity, he has been the primary drafter of rule amendments for Rule 23 on class actions that went into effect in 2003 and 2018, and is now working on possible rule changes dealing with multidistrict litigatoin. He has also been primary drifter of discovery amendments that went into effect in 2000, 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2015. In addition, he is the lead author of four volumes of the Federal Practice & Procedure treatise, the leading US treatise on federal practice known as Wright & Miller. He is the author of the discovery volumes of that treatise.
