Justice Jeroen Chorus

The Netherlands: bridging the distance between victims and settlement 

Mr Justice Jeroen M.J. Chorus (1942) is a sometime vice-president of the Amsterdam Court of appeal, a sometime ordinarius professor of Roman Law and Legal History at Leiden University and now an independent senior legal adviser.

He graduated at Leiden (1966) where he also obtained the degree of doctor (1976). He worked at Edinburgh University, University College London, University of Amsterdam and Leiden University (chair of Roman Law and Legal History, 1986-1993).

He was raised to the bench in 1977 (Arnhem district court, 1977-1982; Amsterdam Court of appeal, 1982-1986 and 1992-2012; both in the private law and the criminal law divisions).

He is a member of the board of the Institute of Anglo-American Law at Leiden.

He is a member of the Comitato Direttivo of the Associazione Internazionale per la Ricerca Storico-Giuridica e Comparatistica ARISTEC at Rome.

His published scholarly works are mainly concerned with Civil Procedure, Roman Law, including its medieval and modern history, and Comparative Law.
