Collective redress in Europe – What role for consumer associations ?
A number of national collective redress systems in Europe limit the legal standing to bring
cases either to exclusively consumer associations, or to consumer associations and
certain public bodies.
In the EU countries with an effective collective redress procedure, BEUC member
organisations actively bring cases, even though the costs and the financial risks can be

of cases, also introducing possible solutions, included in the last year’s European
Commission’s proposal for a directive on Representative actions.
